Responsibilities:

  • Performs journeyman level trades work as a Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic and installs, maintains, and repairs a variety of complex equipment and systems involving power boilers with complicated components, critical requirements, and rigid tolerances.
  • Repairs, troubleshoots, and maintains single-and-multiple fuel power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment such as, water treatment systems,chemical dispensers, electrostatic precipitators, bag houses and ash removal equipment, and wet particulate scrubbers. Power boilers to which assigned use multi-fuel such as, oil, gas, coal, wood, refuse derived fuel (RDF), tire chips, or combination fuels in steam or hot water production and distribution plants.
  • Power boilers serviced include a variety of auxiliary components such as, fuel delivery systems, induced draft fans, conveyor belts, preheaters, coal pulverizes, worm screw feeders, moving floors, de-aerating equipment, water treatment equipment, economizers,and air compressors that often require regular adjustment and maintenance to meet rigidtolerances.
  • Monitors and tests the operation of power boiler systems to identify malfunctions andpotential problems with equipment such as, automatic controls, valves, bag houses,electrostatic precipitators, lime slurry systems, fly ash recovery systems, piping, pumps,and related components.
  • Examines, adjusts, and replaces and repairs equipment such as, pneumatic and electrical thermostats, governors, regulators, switches, fuel cutoff devices, burners, fuel feed and flame safeguard controls, steam gland seals, bearings, and drive gears.
  • Maintains burners, burner nozzles, and orifice assemblies, and dismantles and locates defects and reassembles and reinstalls components. Services units by cleaning or replacing filters, strainers, orifices, ignition devices, and other items on power boilers.
  • Maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots power boilers and their components using specialized test equipment.
  • Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance on plant systems and equipment including, boiler feed pumps, fuel oil pumps, air compressors, turbines, generators, boiler fixtures, combustion fans and water treatment equipment such as softener/demineralizers and chemical feed system.
  • Balances, aligns, and maintains turbines, pumps, generators, compressors, and maintains ash shredding equipment and pre-heaters.
  • Repairs or replaces flame gauges, controls, relief valves, and ignition devices.
  • Troubleshoots electrical and pneumatic controls. May perform limited diagnostic checks on electronic control devices to determine sources of malfunctions of power boilers.
  • May be required to maintain remote heating boilers and perform major overhauls of the entire system including repair, replacement, and installation of boiler tubes, refractory linings, electronic and electrical controls, and associated components.
  • May work with complex burner management controls and examine electronic and electro-mechanical controls and support equipment for power boilers using infrared, ultra-violet, and related testing devices.
  • Makes complex technical decisions and judgments for repairs on complex boiler systemsand subsystems with limited technical guidance.
  • Uses judgment to plan equipment repairs and determines maintenance requirements.
  • Is responsible for assuring all safety procedures and environmental control safeguardsare followed when working near hot surfaces, chemical compounds, or moving machinery.
  • Completed work is reviewed by the supervisor for adherence to established practices, outlined objectives, and technical requirements.
  • May work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work may requirefrequent standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, or climbing.
  • May occasionally work from scaffolds and platforms and may perform strenuous work while standing, sitting, or lying. May frequently lift and carry tools and equipmentweighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally items weighing more with assistance of material lifting devices or other workers.
  • The work is usually performed indoors on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to;dust, dirt, hazardous chemicals, High-temperature surfaces, high ambient temperatures, direct steam, excessive noise, rotating machinery, asbestos insulation, confined spaces, high voltage, hazardous fumes, high pressure air, steam, or fluids.
  • May occasionally service equipment outdoors under adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to the potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions follows prescribed safety practices and Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as, safety Eye and Ear protection, reflective vests, aprons, face shield, coveralls, hard-toeshoes, respirators, hardhats, and fire retardant gloves.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License from the STATE.
  • Must maintain welder certification according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes.
  • Willingness to be scheduled for standby/emergency call-ins on a rotational basis with other similarly qualified employees.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Welder certification in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Must maintain Class A Commercial Driver’s License from the State.
  • Journeyman level knowledge and skill to install, maintain, and repair a variety of steam and/or hot water equipment systems involving power boilers with complicated components, critical requirements, and rigid tolerances.
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical, electromechanical, and pneumatic principles and a  working knowledge of electronics to repair and maintain power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of automatic and semi-automatic boiler management systems that use manual, electric, electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical controls.
  • Skills to troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and replace defective equipment and components in power plants and heating systems.
  • Working knowledge of electronic controls and devices to identify equipment malfunctions, assess repair requirements, and replace or coordinate repairs for state-of-the-art control systems such as, microprocessors and other solid state devices.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and repair of pollution control equipment such as, bag houses and electrostatic precipitators; skill to repair, install, connect, and adjust variable speed motors, control relays, solenoids, limit switches, thermostats, rheostats, aquastats, and other similar devices.
  • Skill to maintain, repair, and adjust hydraulic, safety valves, feed water pumps, fuel lines and gas line components, coal pulverizers, combustion fans, unfired pressure vessels, and coal and ash handling equipment.
  • Skill in the use of stationary and industrial type power equipment such as, power saws, lathes, and grinders to repair or install equipment; and skill in the use of test equipment such as, combustion analyzers, magnehelics/manometers, draft gage, IR cameras, thermal imaging guns, metal thickness gage, pyrometers, ohmmeters, and flow meters to identify defects, repairs needed, or preventive maintenance required.
  • Working knowledge of boiler water treatment equipment and/or systems.
